biography/contact - Donna L. Maxwell
Born in Yonkers, NY, &
raised in Philadelphia, PA, I'm a mostly "self taught" artist.
Although my "formal" education was in nursing & business (go
figure), I have attended classes &
workshops with many extremely talented & hard-working fine artists since
1987. I've painted more or less part-time since then, whenever I found
a few spare hours. Some years I painted like crazy, some years unable
to do more than 2 paintings... When I look back I realize
that I always returned to painting as a grounding force. Artwork is
one of the great joys of my life.
My
artistic inspiration is drawn from the world around (& within) each of us.
Watercolor is my
favorite medium. Painting in watercolor has taught me valuable lessons about
letting go. The more I try to control the outcome, the more muddy &
overworked the painting becomes. The paintings everyone seems to like the
best, & those I have enjoyed painting, have always resulted from relaxation
& letting the image take shape on it’s own. I'm drawn to landscape painting
~ realistic or abstract. Seascapes and water reflections are especially
fascinating.
My hope is to express emotion & mood, one moment in time, yet
timeless...through the language of watercolor. My goal is to enjoy
myself & relax, something I thankfully finally learned is very important.

At this moment I would like to express my gratitude to everyone who has believed in me, even when I was unsure of myself.
